Applying journalistic methods to examine the field of global health.
Our interdisciplinary approach to reporting on global health makes us unique. While traditional global health journalism has mostly focused on the language of science, we stand out by examining global health policy-making through the various lenses of politics, economics, trade, law, governance, and diplomacy. Our reporting offers perspective, making links simultaneously across policy spheres and shedding light on many of the closed-door discussions on global health in Geneva. We seek to promote greater accountability and transparency in policy making by using journalistic methods to shed light on global health issues, agendas and positions and by illuminating the intricate web of power and politics behind technical decision making. We provide actionable information and raise critical questions in our newsletters with policy intelligence and investigate analyses.
Our analysis of facts, independent investigations, and discussions on prevailing narratives, critical thinking, references to official documents, positions, and the practice of multiple sourcing, all combine to inform our editorial decisions. We work on the ground and engage with a variety of trusted diplomatic sources, staying connected to the action and debates as they unfold.
We are conscious of the risks and mindfully provide accurate information that upholds the integrity of our initiative without jeopardising ongoing policymaking. We provide in-depth and critical reporting often not seen in mainstream narratives. We have been funded by a diverse mix of revenues including subscriptions, consulting work and reporting grants. Our loyal readership demonstrates confidence and value in our work.
We are proud to offer a valuable service to diplomats and negotiators as well as thousands of readers globally who are interested in following on how international health policy is shaped in Geneva.
Our first book, The TRIPS Waiver Negotiations at the World Trade Organisation, is a journalistic chronicle on the negotiating history of the TRIPS waiver discussions at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) The publication delves into the highly watched negotiations around the TRIPS Waiver proposal at the WTO between October 2020 and March 2024. The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights often creates barriers to achieving equity in access to medical products in developing countries. With India and South Africa at the forefront of the debate, many of these countries sought to temporarily suspend certain provisions of the TRIPS Agreement to expand manufacturing capacities and broaden access in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Geneva Health Files tracked these negotiations, applying the same investigative and interdisciplinary approach as we do to all our reporting. The final product is a compilation of the 50 stories we published over the two years of debates. It weaves the story behind the negotiations and their outcome, providing context and thoughtfully examining the implications for global health. The reportage is available in paperback or as an E-book.
